By watching Pitt’s paintings, one feels intrigued by all the unconventional arrangement of shapes and colors. Like a snapshot of nowhere else than Pitt’s own mind, which clearly appeared real as soon as one pays attention in the moment.
How could he get there?
Pitt’s cleverness very soon showed him that using basic geometrical elements could drive the spectator’s attention precisely to where he wanted. Regardless, if it was a tiny piece of paper or a building’s wall, he could lead people’s imagination by transforming their perspective. One of the key effects of his artworks was sight confusion by abusing the contrast between Harmony and Tension.
from Harmony to Tension
Swinging between Harmony and Tension, Pitt could add an extra layer of intensity and curiosity to his artworks, as the spectator was led by the rhythm of this transition between what hold us together and what tear us apart. Pitt was no amateur on this business, he knew precisely what he needed to build his image into the spectators mind.
Expanding the Grid.
Another element always present in Pitt’s artworks was his dynamic alternative to the conventional usage of planar grid to orient objects in space.
“Objects don’t necessary need to hang constraint to a Vertical or Horizontal axis. They can be oriented by Diagonals based on an imaginary field where you set them in.”
Objects in this field, aligned to (or shaped like) diagonals, lead the spectator’s sight in the picture or out of it. With that, Pitt opened a door suggesting a perspective change to suit his own psychological needs.
